Good job!

Assignment #3: Chapter 3
11/03/09

Vera: Vera Claythorne is one of the ten guests on Indian Island. She wanted a job as a teacher but right now she is Mrs. Owen's new secretary. Vera has a lover named Hugo who is not attending the island with her. The strange thing about Vera is that she was being blamed for a crime but she was found not guilty. They give us a clue in the story that her crime might have to do with water or someone drowning.

Mrs. Rogers: Mrs. Rogers is one of two housekeeper she is a very nice but creepy lady. She seems almost though immoral or ghostly. Mrs. Rogers was ordered to turn on the recording of this strange voice announcing everyone's name and who they have killed in their lives. But yet even though Mrs. Rogers turned on the recording and knew it was playing she "fainted".

Mr. Davis: Mr. Davis's real name is Mr. Blore. We knew from the beginning of the story that Mr. Blore was being paid to come here but we didn't know why. Now we know that he is a detective sent to steak out this island but his thoughts are that they were all invited there by a madman.

Mr Rogers: Mr. Rogers is the other housekeeper and he is married to Mrs. Rogers. He has strangly never met Mr. Owens and started working two days ago. Mr. Rogers first job was to turn on this record during dinner the first night but all he knew about it was that it was in a dresser drawer and Mrs. Rogers was supposed to turn it on.

Mr. Justice Wargrave: Wargrave is the first charecter that we talk about in this book. He is a retired man that smokes cigars. The strange thing about Wargrave is that right off the bat he knew that Mr. Davis's name was not called over the announcement but the name Mr. Blore was.

Clever guy, that Judge. He often catches the little details that readers sometimes overlook. Why is that an easy feat for him? You did a nice job of finding interesting characteristics about each one of the suspects involved.

Assignment #2 (to be done in class on Wednesday, December 2)

12/03/09
Sorry Mrs. M! I was not here on Wednesday so I am finishing it in class today.
No problem. I know you've been busy with the play!

  • On your student page ABOVE assignment #1, choose one of the following: suspense or foreshadowing.
  • Find four examples of suspense OR foreshadowing in chapter two.
  • Write the exact wording from the book - that means type the sentences exactly as they are written.
  • In a well-written paragraph, explain why these sentences clearly show either suspense or foreshadowing.

1. The first example of suspense is when the group of guests are on the boat and they see the mansion for the first time. The mansion lived up to expectation.
  • "The boat churned its way around the rock. Now at last the hous came into view. The south side of the island was quite different. It shelved gently down the sea. The house was there facing south-low and square and modern looking with rounded windows letting in all the light. An exciting house-a house that lived up to expectation."

2. Another part of this chapter that contains suspense is when Vera was talking to Mrs. Rogers and there was just something about her that made her seem ghostly.

  • "Mrs. Rogers had a flat monotonous voice. Vera looked at her curiously. What a white bloodless ghost of a woman! Very respectable looking, with her hair dragged back from her face and her black dress. Queer light eyes that shifted the whole time from place to place. Vera thought: She looks frightened of her own shadow. Yes, that was it-frightened! She looked like a woman that walked in mortal fear."

3. The next part of suspense in this chapter is when Vera is admiring the sea and then she starts thinking about drowning and how deep the sea is.
  • "How big the sea was! From here there was no land to be seen anywhere-just a vast expanse of blue water rippling in the evening sun. The sea....So peaceful to-day-sometimes so cruel....The sea that dragged you down to its depths. Drowned.... Found drowned.... Drowned at sea.... Drowned-drowned-drowned .... No, she wouldn't remember.... She would not think of it! All that was over...."

4. Finally, the last bit of suspense is when Dr. Armstrong wants to go thank the Owens but they are not there.
  • "Mr. Justice Wargrave grunted: Drinks in the hall. Dr. Armstrong said: I must go and pay my respects to my host and hostess. Mr. Justice wargrave closed his eyes again, looking decidedly reptilian and said: You can't do that. Dr. Armstrong was startled. Why not? The judge said: No host and hostess. Very curious state of affairs. Don't understand this place."

Yes. Those are all good examples of suspense and mystery. Good choices.

Before reading Chapter 1, consider the following:

11/30/09

how does a mystery novel differ from a narrative?
A mystery novel is different from a narrative novel because a mystery book gives you clues that lead up to an intense climax. In a narrative book usually the main charecter is telling you a story rather than having you actually experience it.

how might the title be a clue to the story?
The title is a clue to the story because it really gives you a hint that it is a murder mystery and that people are disappearing. The title is " And Then There Were None" which tells you that there was a group of people and they were killed so there was no one left.

Ali-
Good start! A second assignment was posted yesterday. Read it carefully and follow the directions.
